Lactation Consultant

Licensed Lactation Consultant
Position Description

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Education: Degree: As a minimum, this position requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
* Licensure: Must be in good standing with the International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC).
* Experience: Shall have provided a minimum of one year lactation consultant services or a minimum of 1,000-hour clinical internship.
* Certification: 1) Possess and maintain current certification in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) by the American Academy of Pediatrics/American Heart Association. 2) Possess and maintain a current BLS certification (American Heart Association – Healthcare Provider).
* Must be a U.S. citizen and can pass a background check/security clearance.
DUTIES: The duties include but are not limited to the following:
* Performs comprehensive lactation assessment of the mother and her infant within the hospital setting following the policy and guidelines of postpartum and newborn nursery care required for Government beneficiaries.
* Provides comprehensive care to the perinatal mother desiring to lactate.
* Assesses mothers and newborns for normal/abnormal anatomy to determine their ability to breastfeed.
* Creates a milieu that promotes learning for staff and patients.
* Conducts bedside lactation rounds daily.
* Integrates cultural, psychosocial, nutritional, and pharmacological aspects of breastfeeding into lactation consultant practice.
* Acts as an advocate for breastfeeding in the community, workplace, and within the health care professions.
* Maintains comprehensive client records.
* Consults with mothers having breastfeeding difficulties.
* Participates appropriately in communication and decision-making activities within the Birthing Center and Pediatric Clinic.
* Appropriately refers breastfeeding mothers for breast pump rentals and supplies.
* Plans, teaches and conducts in-service education for maternity nursing staff.
* Plans, organizes and delivers lactation management services to all breastfeeding patients, both in-patient and out-patient.
* Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Conducts quality assurance programs to monitor the caliber of the program.
* Effectively communicates and collaborates with a diverse group of people to inform the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization.
* Effectively uses appropriate communication format in addressing professional issues
* Uses excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activities following requirements.
STAFFING & SCHEDULING:
* Duty Hours: Normal duty hours are either 0630-1530, 0700-1600, or 0730-1630 Monday-Friday or Flex shifts. Flex shifts are utilized to support mission requirements, not Contactor preference and must be approved by the Government Supervisor and the COR. Flex shifts can consist of 8, 9, or 10-hour shifts and will not exceed 80 hours in a two-week pay period. On occasion, work hours may be altered to facilitate HCW attendance for training/teaching shifts. Training/teaching shifts may be scheduled for 1200-2100. Schedule changes shall be published by the Government Supervisor two weeks before implementation of the new shift.
* Place of Performance: The work to be performed will be at 673d Medical Group at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, AK.
